Taking the plunge, part 2

Exactly three years ago this week, I decided to buy some running shoes and train for my first 5k. A lot has happened since then, including a difficult pregnancy and some big life changes. But since that time I’ve run numerous races and made the switch from the road to the trail. I’ve completed a half marathon, a triathlon and many 10+ mile mountain trail races. I even won first place for my age group in a very small mountain trail race. I have many races planned for the upcoming year and I’m looking to try my first adventure race next year. Trail running has become a regular part of my life. I have now added in strength-training and diet changes to take my fitness from good enough to much better.

And it all began with a challenge I gave myself about taking time for me and focusing on my health. It turned into something much more–a passion for challenging myself and creating a fit, healthy lifestyle for me and my family.

And it has been a life saver. It helps me manage my stress and allows me to become an even better mommy to my little ones.

If you had asked me three years ago if I could have ever become a runner and complete races and triathlons, I would have laughed and thought you were crazy.

But here I am, on a journey that I never expected. And if I can make such huge changes in a short amount of time, I know I could helps others, too. Which is why I’ve been doing some studying lately!

photoHopefully in a few more months I’ll be starting my journey as a certified personal trainer. I’ll be focusing on using the outdoors and natural landscapes as my gym. I’m so excited to see how all of this comes together!

My First Half Marathon

This morning I ran the Haunted Half Marathon on the lovely Cumberland Plateau located in Eastern Tennessee.  It was a beautiful day for a run!  The air was crisp and cool and the leaves were covered in the shades of autumn.  I was very pleased with my pace and run time as well.

And the best part of the entire race was that I got to cross the finish line with my boys!  I couldn’t wait to get to the end to see their smiling faces.

Today I ran on a team that benefitted Rising Above Ministries, an organization that supports families with special needs children.  I dedicated each mile to a child with a special needs today and it was the greatest motivation to keep me running strong when the hills got high.  What an awesome experience!

Run Like No One’s Watching

Once upon a time I used to look at people who ran and think that they must enjoy misery.  I truly couldn’t understand why anyone would want to run.  I personally hated to run.  Hike 13 miles up a mountain?  No problem.  Paddle for 8 hours straight?  You betcha. But run one mile….no way.

In all fairness, I always felt like I was doing something wrong when I ran.  Did I look ridiculous? Was I wearing the right shoes?  How fast and how far was I supposed to run?  Fast forward about 10 years and here I am, not only completing every 5K I can find**, but now training for a half-marathon.

Yes, you read that right. I’m training to participate in a very special half-marathon that will take place in October.  I’m no where near ready, but I’m training hard and making progress with each run.  And who cares what I look like when I run or what shoes I wear (although I did find some awesome ones, for sure).  I guess that’s what happens when you age….you start doing things for you, not for the approval of others.

Now that I’m older and a smidge wiser, I find that I really do enjoy running.  Not only is it a great challenge for me, but I truly love trail running in the woods near my house.  It’s such a great time to connect with nature, and such a release as well.

So I decided to push myself hard and train for a half marathon–but not just any half marathon.  I will be participating and partnering with a special needs ministry.  I will cross the finish line with a special needs participant, and I cannot wait!!  Not only do I get to run for myself and see how far I can push myself, but I get to help someone else in the process.  If you live in the Tennessee area, I encourage you to check it out.  They are in need of more runners and special needs participants.  It’s an awesome reason to run!
