Here at Hike. Blog. Love. we advocate adventure for all. We fully believe that all people, especially children and those with special needs, can and should reap the rewards that come from being active outdoors.
As a mom to two young children, one of whom has significant special needs, I am keenly aware that outdoor activities and travel–and just every day life in general–can create a huge amount of stress when it comes to keeping kids safe. That’s why I am starting a new, weekly project on the blog that will bring you news, product reviews and giveaways regarding child safety. Some of the products and services will focus specifically on children with special needs, but many will be applicable to all children. I am so excited to begin this new project, and I hope you will find it helpful to you and your family.
Today I want to share with you about a great free service called Smart911. This service allows you to create a free SmartSafety profile for your family to provide critical, lifesaving data to 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency call. It is 100% private, secure and used by 9-1-1 centers across the country. In fact, I was contacted by Smart911 to let me know it is available in my area. Even better, it’s even endorced by my local 911 center. I just created a SmartSafety profile for my own family and I’m so glad I did.
So why should you take advantage of such a service?
“When you call 911 today, the operator receives very little information about you – basically just your phone number and your general location. In a situation where seconds count, being able to provide the operator with other critical information about you and your family the instant your call is made can be the difference between life and death. Smart911 was created by leaders in the fields of privacy and information management with the firm belief that providing 9-1-1 with additional timely information about you when you call, can help speed and enhance the effectiveness of an emergency response.” via www.smart911.com
With Smart911, operators will have instant access to cellphone numbers, photos, special medical conditions and medications. For those of us with special needs children or medically fragile children, this service truly could mean the difference between life or death.
I encourage you to visit www.smart911.com to learn more about this free service and to see if it is available in your area. If it’s not, the website tells you how to advocate for it in your area.
Let me know in the comments below if you have or will take advantage of this great service!
