Mosquitoes. I hate them. They, on the other hand, love me. And they love little man as well.
The only thing I hate more than mosquitoes is having to douse little man in DEET everyday…so, I’d like to introduce you to this product (OK, btw, I’m doing this review because I like the product and thought it might be helpful to the people that read my blog…all 10 of you …I’m not endorsing it or getting anything out of it, just saying I like it):
Kids Herbal Armor (natural insect repellent)
Yes, the bottle looks a little worn because it gets carried everywhere
It’s been known for a long time that there are other non-toxic agents that do effectively repel mosquitoes. Such examples are lemongrass and citronella. The only downfall is that they do not last as long as DEET-containing products, so they have to be reapplied very often. This is also the case for the repellent pictured above which contains both citronella and lemongrass. I picked up a bottle of this while we were in Minnesota but I’ll admit that I didn’t have high expectations for it. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. All in all, I’d have to say I was quite impressed with the abilitly of the product to keep mosquitoes away. Oh, and it smells good! I’ve found that you need to be liberal with application and reapply about every 30 minutes, but to me, it’s worth it to avoid using DEET on a daily basis, especially for the kiddo. For situations where it was more dire to be sure mosquitoes were kept at bay (think malaria!), I’d go with a DEET containing product. But for the backyard or a leisurely outdoor walk, this less toxic version is a great way to go. Just thought I’d share my experience and hopefully it will be helpful to someone!
I’m thinking that I will synthesize (listen to me getting all sciencey) my own “homemade” repellent…I’ll let you know how it goes. Anybody else have any tips, brands or suggestions when it comes to insect repellents? If so, leave me a comment.
